Age: 56
Family: Adult married daughter & adult son living out of state
Type of illness: Indolent BCell Lymphocytic Lymphoma, stage 4
Diagnosed: December 2002

February, 2004
Having now been involved with Team In Training for two years, I will say that my life prior to my diagnosis seems like a million years ago. A brief recap of me before 2000(when I started feeling sick) or 2002 (when I got my diagnosis) is: I was born in a small town in Northern California… and I came to the Bay Area for the first time in1968 for college. I was married to a Palo Alto girl in Sunnyvale, lived with my family for 25 years in various places throughout the West Coast before we divorced. I have raised two wonderful children, worked for a couple of major international corporations, was successful in many things that I did, grew older and looked forward to coming of an age to retire and relax. By 1998, I was living in the Santa Cruz area with my adult son. I had a home near the Capitola beach, and was starting to gray in the temples. Rock ‘n’ roll was still a part of my life, communicating professionally about quality processes, initiatives, and purposes my career, and looking forward to “what’s next” was my outlook.

  • Where do you live?: Santa Cruz
  • Home Team: Dog Saphira (who I won at a silent auction for LLS) and Cat Lacy. Back east, my whole family is routing me on.
  • Hometown: North Brunswick, NJ
  • Motivation: The perspective I get from honorees’ stories and the looming question of “Can I really do this?”
  • Honoree(s): Every honoree I’ve met via past TNT experiences, as well as some family members and friends who have fought other types of cancers.
  • Favorite tri gadget(s): Probably my helmet — sense of security! I wish I could wear it during the swim! :-)
  • Last three books read: Memory Keepers Daughter, Marley and Me, Harry Potter 7
  • Last three movies seen: Can’t even think of one! Just don’t have that kind of time! Although now that I have my bike trainer …
  • What person do you look up to the most and why? Probably my siblings: their decisions have influenced me my whole life.
  • Favorite local cheap-eats restaurant: Malabar/ Asian Rose, although they’re not so cheap anymore
  • Desert Island Five: Jeez - Truthfully, I’d be practical and therefore boring: clothes, food, water, waterproof matches….. and a fully charged cell phone?!? :-)
  • What did you want to be when you grew up? A teacher
  • Middle name meme:
    Loves a good challenge
Yearns to have just one more hour sleep every morning
    Never complains
    Needs to be warm!
    Energetic

  • Where do you live?: Santa Cruz, off Seabright
  • Home Team: My girlfriend Carrie and my bosses Aaron and Dina who all have done the tri team before, also my turtle Charlie
  • Hometown: San Francisco
  • Motivation: hmm…well it’s fun training, and I can eat lots of recovery food and it’s a good cause, and TNT is addictive
  • Favorite tri gadget(s): Well it’s not really a gadget but I’d have to say Body Glide, I use it like soap
  • Last three books read: Harry Potter 6, Harry Potter 7, The Golden Compass
  • Last three movies seen: Spies Like Us, Office Space, Son in Law
  • What person do you look up to the most and why? Yao Ming, because he’s really tall.
  • Favorite local cheap-eats restaurant: Engfer Pizza
  • Desert Island Five: Dang these questions are hard…the question didn’t say that you were stranded so … probably a mountain bike, some chapstick, a jacket, chain lube and a GPS enabled verizon cell-phone just in case I am actually stranded (it also comes with “the network” so technically that would be people but it’s kind of a loop hole).
  • What did you want to be when you grew up? A Lego designer
  • Middle name meme:
Kung Fu is fun to watch
    Orngina should not be mispronounced
Cats roam my neighborhood, sometimes they fight, I hate them
    Hats give you hat hair

    IU #2: All about bikes!

    DSCN4709.JPG
click the photo to see a slideshow

Coach Dan taught us how to clean them.
Coach Mike taught us how to change their tires.
Coach Dana made sure everyone could grab a bottle on the go.
Coach Wass explained the finer points of feathering your breaks on the descent.
And, Coach Joe let it all hang out. By making sure he shifted his weight behind his seat in an emergency stop. Why? What were you thinking?

Good luck to all running the Nike full or half tomorrow!
