Coaches Message: IronWeek #45
Another weekend, another couple of milestones reached…
Congratulations to Nikki for completing her triple brick in Santa Cruz! Kudos go out to Coach Dan and Jesus for doing the triple with her, Brian for supporting at home base, and a big thanks goes out to Trista, Beatrice, and IT Alum Donna for performing aid station duties for the rest of us IMCers who did our ride, and then hanging out at the triple brick finish for Nikki.
This weekend also marks the entry into one of the most anticipated points of the season for any aspiring Ironman, TAPER!!! IMC and IML racers will experience the winding down of the training season that we all worked so hard for. You earned it, enjoy it, and take it as it comes. This is a period where some athletes feel as though they aren’t doing enough and are losing fitness/readiness for raceday. No matter how badly you might want to train more than the schedule says, DON’T. The hay is in the barn, there isn’t any more you can do to add to your training. Doing more than what is prescribed will actually take away from your preparedness. This is a time to allow your muscles to re-build, your glycogen stores to build, and mind to settle in.
This Wednesday is a coached track workout at De Anza while IMW swims. Saturday is an OYO brick for IMC/IML, Nikki does a 50-70 mile ride. Sunday is a coached swim/run at Gunderson high school for IMC/IML, Nikki does a 56 mile bike/13 mile run.
Hang in there, Nikki. Your taper will be here before you know it. :-)
The Ironteam season is a lot like life. 10% of it is exciting, 90% is slog and drudge… We have all seen how successful our teammates have been in their events. Not only does the training work but it works very well! It’s very important to stay the course on the home stretch. Soon we too will be racing, not only for ourselves but for those we fundraise for. Our 10% is almost upon us, and what an exciting time this is…
Go long, Go strong, Go TEAM, IRONTEAM!!!
